too much coffee, too little inspiration

April 26, 2010 1 comment

I’ve gotten in the habit of drinking two large “K-cups” of coffee at the office practically every day. I don’t usually notice how awake it keeps me because my wife’s work schedule gets her home at 11:45pm. Being up until she gets home isn’t a big deal, even if normally I would have been in bed for at least an hour at that point.

Since my sister passed away this January I’ve reopened my eyes to some of the more “eastern” cultures and traditions. She seemed to do only things that she loved, and only had possessions that were either essential or inspirational. As we packed up her apartment we noticed that everything was either a bare essential (a horribly cheap, burnt, and dinged saucepan) or something she absolutely loved (a single really nice Calphalon 10″ skillet). I was thoroughly impressed with this lifestyle and have been trying to rediscover meditation for myself.

I just sat down with a guided meditation mp3 that I’ve used about 2 times so far and could NOT sit still or concentrate (or not concentrate, I should say). It was bad. I was meditating and checking my email on my phone. Ridiculous. I gave up after about 5 minutes.

So the whole point of this post was to talk about TED (not The Energy Detective…). I’m feeling severely lacking in the inspiration department and after the meditation fiasco quickly jumped online to search for something worth reading.  I’ve seen some very deep, profound, and inspirational things on TED.   I’ve also seen things that were quite silly but still made you think.

Just thought I’d post a link.  This site is definitely worth perusing for a few hours or days.  You can find something in pretty much any field.  Very much recommended.

lazy weekend

Let’s see… almost 90 degrees on Friday, high 50’s and windy on Saturday, 38 degrees Saturday night… I can’t keep it straight. We all feel like we’re on the verge of being sick all the time.

Hanging out at home with the wife, watching Formula One and Ninja Warrior, perfectly content.

Have to go start our next big job tomorrow and need to get our Control4 stuff together for the office. Then it’s off to see Mastodon, Between the Buried and Me, Baroness, and Valiant Thorr Tuesday night at Ram’s Head Live.

This should be an interesting week.

How can you not love this guy?  Has the street “cred” of being a true metalhead (Strapping Young Lad), great musical talent that he reigns in for albums like Ki, great sense of humor for stuff like Ziltoid the Omniscient.

I think this video embodies him pretty well. Enjoy!  www.hevydevy.com

Needed another outlet…

So… what was the flaw with WiresAndBlinkingLights?  Well, nothing in theory.  Consumed by work I decided to create a blog that let me rant about the industry.  Kinda fun, eh?  Oh wait, all you do is work anyway.  Do you really think that spending even more of your free time thinking about work?  Hmm??

🙂

Last year I would work 14-16 hour days in the field or in the office.  When I wasn’t at the office I would be at home…working, researching, programming, designing…  Slowly I forced myself to work less and less.  I got down to about 9 hours a day, but would still spend all my waking energy thinking about whatever it was I had done all day.  Not much better… less hours on my paycheck, too.

Now I’m working just over 8 hours and coming home and actively not working.  I’ll even drive home with the intention of looking something up, or doing some more brainstorming, or whatever.  It never happens.  I might open up a file, but I invariably end up drifting off and doing something else.

So… the old blog?  The only times I’ve even thought about it recently have been when I wanted to post something completely unrelated to work.  Since I didn’t want that blog to be “scatterbrained” I would just post nothing.  Hence the lack of updates.

So hopefully this will be a place for me to dump whatever’s in my little brain.  Work stuff or… umm… whatever else it is I’m supposed to be doing besides work… 🙂
